Be Green…you can start small

April 23rd, 2008

OK I live in Seattle, the entire state is completely green and I LOVE IT!  I’m not wearing berkinstocks just yet, but WA does a great job of allowing you to be apart of saving the planet.

We have ONE big green recycling bin and everything goes in it: Plastic, Cardboard, Glass, Paper, etc.

We also have a bunch of local organic stores that use local farmers for their produce section, therefore not only are we supporting local farmers (which we all should do) but we are saving the earth by using less gas to transport goods.

My favorite things to do is use Cloth Grocery bags (our Wholes Foods, is actually do away with plastic bags for good).  I requested some really cool ones for Christmas and they are great.  I get all my groceries in 3 bags versus having them put one can of something into one plastic bag and walking out with at least 12 plastic bags..yuck!  Here are the bags I use…they hold a ton and I love throwing them over my shoulder versus holding 5 bags in one hand resulting in red lines and numb hands.

Great visitors!

April 17th, 2008

My sister, Tiffany, had the opportunity to bring her and Tom’s three children out to Seattle for their Spring Break.  They arrived last Tuesday and stayed with Mike and I until Saturday afternoon.  We had such an AWESOME visit with them all.  It had almost been an entire year since we had seen the kids so we were so excited.  I picked them all up at the airport Tuesday afternoon and we loaded up all the car seats in the 4 Runner and headed off to Snoqualmie.  They were excited to see me, but they were so excited to see Uncle Mike and play any videos games they knew he would have.  :-)

Tuesday night we took a long walk around the neighborhood and stopped off at our local Mexican restaurant for dinner…little Whitney made it through the chips and salsa and then passed out on Mom’s lap, it of course was around 9:30 PM their time.

Wednesday we took our time getting up and headed for our first Seattle Attraction, Snoqualmie Falls!  The kids had no idea what to expect and you should have seen their faces.  They were so AMAZED!   Next stop was one of the largest log’s I have ever seen.  It’s right down the road from us, but we have never actually stopped and read about it…I knew the kids would find cool….see the pictures. We made a stop in Bellevue (I had an interview) and then Mike joined us for lunch at Red Robin.  After lunch we headed down to the Boeing Fields to visit the Museum of Flight.  The kids got to take turns sitting in jets and walking on planes. Home for pizza and the kids new favorite movie “Alvin and the Chipmunks”…so sweet to hear the kids laughing.

Thursday we loaded up a packed lunch and headed down to the Seattle Center.  There we took in the Pacific Science Center, an IMAX about the Grand Canyon, a trip over to the Space Needle (during the 45 min. of sunshine we had), pony rides, and a stop at the Butterfly Museum.  Dinner tonight was back at Red Robin with the kids first and best shakes.

Mike was able to take Friday off so he took the boys in his car and I had the girls in mine.  We headed down to Pike’s Place Market to see all the stinky fish and watch the fisherman “throw the fish”.  We stopped off at Beecher’s for the famous Flagship cheese and actually got to catch them making all the cheese, they thought that was pretty cool.  Next stop Argosy Cruise around the harbor of the Puget Sound, we got to “bark” at some seals, snap some great pictures, and see some neat Seattle landmarks.  Friday night we made dinner and relaxed. Mike played Play Station/Xbox games and I painted Whitney’s nails. :-)

Saturday morning we woke up to 75 degree weather, and jumped in the car to head back to Snoqualmie Falls so we could actually hike down.  The kiddos were so excited to be that close to such a huge waterfall.  Back to the house for lunch, another walk, and then off to the airport.

It was so much fun to spend time with them, they have all grown up so much and they are so sweet and have the funniest personalities.  Thanks to Tiffany for flying 3 kids by herself 3,000 miles away, it means so much that we were able to share our home and city with you all.  Can’t wait to have you back!

Snowing in Snoqualmie

March 31st, 2008

So I am guessing that “Spring” didn’t hear my request, oh well.  We had snow off and on all weekend and it was flurring again this morning when we left for work.  Sunday morning we woke up to about 3-4 inches of snow, I must say it’s so beautiful out here when it snows.  We have the best views from our house of Mt. Si and Mike and I just stood in front of our bedroom window yesterday looking out at all the mountains covered in snow.

We had a great weekend.  Friday night we stayed home and watched “I AM Legend” with Will Smith, Friday night we didn’t sleep because we stayed up watching “I AM Legend”. :-)   Saturday morning we did our usually morning outting to Cafe Ladro (they know us so well they don’t even ask what we want anymore, they just making it), then it’s off to Panera for an asiago bagel and an apple crunch bagel….Cooper loves the asiago bagel.  Saturday night we had dinner in Belltown at Mama’s mexician with Patrick and Paige.  We have been trying once a month to go out to dinner with them and try new restaurants, I think I’m goning to try to make a page or restaurant reviews to include all that we have done so far.  Any way, after that we headed to The Cheesecake Factory for dessert.  Delicious!

Dear Spring

March 20th, 2008

Dear Spring,

I’m so glad that you have arrived in 2008, but I’m just wondering do you think you could swing by the West Coast first instead of last this year?  When you come at the end of June it’s right next to summer and we can’t enjoy you as much.  I am sure Winter has things to do and would be happy to step out of the way. Just a thought.

:-)

Hello World

March 14th, 2008

It’s been way to long since I have blogged. I hope everyone is staying healthy and happy. I’m going to make the attempt to remember what has happened over the last couple months. Where do I start??? I’ll try to go back an add pictures as I can.

Since it’s been so long, I thought I would mix up the theme a bit as well. Hope you like it.

December

March 14th, 2008
  • Tis the season! I love this holiday and everything about it. So much fun and joy!
  • This year Mike and I actually got up on Black Friday (OK so this goes in November not December, but it’s for Christmas), at oh 3:00 AM…hello, crazy people! We had our list of stores and items to buy all plotted out like strategic shoppers would. We went to a ton of shops, including the opening of Target…crazy ass people. Keep in mind, Mike doesn’t enjoy shopping as much as the challenge that is currently taking place. We walk in and his is like you go this way and I’ll go this way and meet you in the back. People are running to get stuff, and why do all you women have shopping carts…get out of our way. :-) So I finally catch up with Mike and I have some board games for our nieces and nephews and he has a TV? Humm, did we need a TV, who’s this TV for. He’s like “everyone was grabbing a TV so I grabbed one too and now they are all gone”. Yes, OK and why…., well turns out it was actually a cool flat screen HD TV with a DVD player, works great in our room…Merry Christmas to us. It was crazy morning but a ton of fun, dare I say I am looking forward to it next year.
  • Mike and I got to see Grace, Joseph, and Jack in their first school Christmas concert. They did such a great job and it was so fun to watch them all sing their little hearts out.
  • We stayed in Seattle this year for Christmas. It turned out to be a CARRUTH CHRISTMAS in SEATTLE! Jennifer, DJ, and the baby (Shaan) flew over from Bozeman and stayed with us. Patrick and Paige stayed in town also, so the only Carruth left was dear ‘ol Pops who was in Atlanta. We twisted his arm and he arrived to a White Christmas in Seattle on Christmas morning. I am pretty sure it’s his first Christmas not in Atlanta in a very, very long time, thank you for making the trip! We had a great week with everyone in town. Patrick/Paige and Mike/I took turns hosting dinners for everyone. We watched some football, played some games, and had a great Christmas.
  • Oh, let’s not forget our Christmas Eve tradition…I put out a spread just like Gran Roberts used to, we watched Christmas Vacation (It never gets old…so funny), and the we toasted Papa and did a shot of custard/eggnog with Mike’s own added kick of something tasty.

November

March 14th, 2008
  • OK, a few weeks to catch our breathe and slow down a bit. Nothing really happened until Thanksgiving. We were able to celebrate our first Thanksgiving with Patrick, Paige and the kids. We were truly thankful to have family again to celebrate Turkey Day with.
  • One of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving, was that I was able to learn how to make Gran Robert’s (Mike’s maternal grandmother) famous yeast dinner rolls. When Aunt Cindy was in town I told her how I really wanted to learn how to make these, because they had been just a staple in our Carruth Thanksgiving’s. However, we weren’t smart enough to take the time to learn how to make them while Gran was here with us. Cindy emailed me her version of the recipe and I pieced it together with the one I had gotten from Gran years ago (just never practiced). And on Thanksgiving Day, we honored Gran with her rolls and I set myself up for lifetime of continuing this sweet tradition and I am so honored to do so. In life there are sweet moments you remember with the one you love, for me having Mike come over to me and say “Thank you baby for making these” is one I hold dear to my heart. We miss you Gran and Papa Roberts.

October

March 14th, 2008
  • OK, I just realized why I haven’t blogged in a long time, we were really busy this past summer.
  • Mike and I celebrated our 6th Wedding Anniversary

  • More visitors to Seattle…this time it was my cousin and her husband, Jennifer & Bobby. It was packed weekend with all the usually pit stops: 1st Starbucks, Pike’s Place Market, rest spots for local brews, The Space Needle (which we had 1st…not TX..hee hee), sovereigns shops where we tried some crab and moose hats on…oh my goodness, great food, more beer, lots of laughs, a little more shopping. Sunday night we ventured over to Ballard (the city where the fisherman from “Deadliest Catch” leave out of), it’s a blue collar little town with some really cool bars and clubs. We went to the Tractor Room to see a great singer from NY play. Mike and I love this place, it was only our second time, (our first time was to see Todd Snider, who you should look up if you haven’t heard of him….he is GREAT) but I think the place reminds us a lot of our days back in Auburn, listening to local music. We had great visit with them, thanks guys for making the trip…Cooper misses you.
  • A few weeks later Mike’s Aunt Cindy and Uncle Paul were in town (Paul had business here) for a few days. It was great to visit with a few nights. They really enjoyed the tour around the Microsoft campus and meeting Cooper (Uncle Paul, he can’t wait to see you again).
  • We meet up with Patrick, Paige, Grace, Joey, Jack, and Elle at Remlinger Farms out in Fall City near us. We took the hay ride out to the field to pick out some great pumpkins. The kids had a great time, so fun to have them here.

September

IMG_0212.JPG

  • The following weekend was Labor Day, and Pops and Marty and came out for a visit. We had a great time with them, good dinners, relaxing by the pool with the kiddos watching Mike and Patrick put together a grill in about an hour (or two, maybe three). Thanks for the visit!

  • The second week in September took us to San Juan Islands just north of us. We booked a 3 Day Sea Kayaking Trip. I sent an email out to most of you, so I am just going to post that email to tell the story. I can say that for our next REI adventure, I will be in a hella better shape than this trip. ;-) Thanks Mike for paddling the whole trip.
IMG_0425.JPGIMG_0331.JPG For those of you that don’t know we ventured out on a 3 day sea kayaking trip to the San Juan Islands. We left on the West side of San Juan and then kayaked about 13 miles to Stewart Island, where we camped for two nights. Our second day we kayaked around the island and then hiked to the light house on the tip of Stewart Island. It was a really cool island, only 47 people reside there and there is no power (they use solar power) or fresh water, and they do have a local school (see pictures) which was pretty cool. We saw lots of seals in the water, they were really funny to watch, we also saw a bald eagle, and yes we saw WHALES. We didn’t see them until we were done with our trip and on top of a cliff relaxing, but we had an amazing view of them. We were able to see about 12-15 come through, so cool!!! Here is our Route It was a lot of hard work and we were very stinky by day 3, but it was all WORTH IT! The San Juan Islands are so beautiful and peaceful. It was so great to be away and to be back in our natural habitat. This is one of those trips we will always remember! Hope you enjoy the PICTURES…sorry for the delay.
